What does Poly B replacement actually cost in Canada?
Repipe quotes can vary by thousands of dollars for the same house, which makes the whole market feel murky. It isn't, once you know the one variable that drives most of the spread.

Based on more than 1,500 completed replacements across Alberta and BC, a full Poly B replacement with restoration typically lands between $8,000 and $19,500 depending on the city: around $11,000 for a typical Alberta home and around $16,000 in Metro Vancouver. Jobs under $7,500 are uncommon anywhere, because drywall, texture and paint restoration is a big share of every job. Access to the pipe, not the size of the house, is the biggest price driver.1

What about condos and townhouses? They sit toward the bottom of their local range thanks to shorter pipe runs, but the old internet claim that a condo repipe runs “under $5,000” doesn’t survive contact with real jobs: fewer than 1 percent of the 1,500+ completed replacements in this dataset finished under $5,000, and fewer than 1 in 10 under $7,500. Restoration, the drywall, texture and paint, is most of the reason.1
What actually moves the price
- 1Access, above everything. An unfinished basement ceiling means the crew sees the pipe; finished ceilings, tile showers, and vaulted spaces mean cutting and restoring drywall. Two identical floor plans can be thousands apart on this alone.
- 2Bathrooms and fixtures. Each added bathroom or wet fixture adds roughly $800 to $1,500 of pipe, fittings, and labour.2
- 3Storeys. Second and third floors mean longer runs and harder routing.

What a proper quote includes
A complete repipe is more than pipe. The full scope is drywall access, complete removal of the Poly B, the new PEX system, pressure testing, drywall repair, and paint, done by one crew or coordinated by one contractor. When a quote is dramatically cheaper than the others, the missing money is usually drywall and paint, which you end up buying separately anyway.2

Timeline
Typical full-home repipes run two to nine days on site depending on size and access, with water off for roughly one to two days in stretches. Most families stay in the home during the work.2
Common questions
Why won't anyone give me a firm price over the phone?
Because the biggest cost driver, access, can't be seen over the phone. A contractor who quotes a firm number without seeing the basement ceiling and bathroom walls is guessing, and the guess protects them, not you. Fixed pricing after a site visit is the standard to look for.
Is the cheapest quote a red flag?
Not automatically, but check what's excluded. Drywall repair, paint, permits, and the insurer documentation package are the common gaps. Compare quotes on identical scope before comparing them on price.
Does replacing Poly B add value to my home?
It removes a negotiating lever more than it adds a premium. Buyers and their inspectors increasingly flag Poly B, insurers may condition coverage on it, and industry reporting suggests homes with original Poly B sell at a discount. A completed repipe with paperwork turns all of that into a non-issue at the negotiating table.3
